Water is an essential and shared resource, growing increasingly scarce across the globe, especially in Australia, where almost all regions are experiencing rainfall deficiencies. It is predicted that by 2030, about 47 percent of the world’s population will be living under severe water stress.
Water is crucial to everyday operations in mining, from processing ore and cooling equipment, to dust suppression and metal production. But inefficient or irresponsible water management does not just affect internal operations; it is also a major economic, social and environmental concern. The threat of water leakage, often containing toxic slurry and acid waste, holds great consequence for industry, communities and government combined.
